The Joy of Sewing

One of the things that I love about sewing is the connection to the past, present and future.

For the past, following the thread from my mother, grandmother, and so many generations down the line. There’s a long tradition of handiwork, quilting, tatting, embroidery, and all sorts of sewing on both sides of my family. When I come across an old package of trim from my grandmother or use her razor-sharp shears, I think about all the hours she spent sewing and creating.

Tatted lace from my great-grandmother, Honey.

For the future, I love teaching people how to sew. In the past few years I’ve taught about half a dozen young people and adults how to make everything from a bow to quilts. Showing people how to use a needle and thread (or a sewing machine) is so rewarding. You gotta have a skill for the Zombie apocalypse, and I think sewing is one of them!

And for the present, I’m enjoying sewing and working on sewing machines. I follow my curiosity where it takes me. There’s always something new to learn, and I’m here to soak it all in.
