7 Free Sewing Projects for Beginners

I have several friends who are learning to sew or returning to it after a long break, so I gathered some sewing patterns for them to use. If you’re also new to sewing, or just wanna make something simple and cute, here are some easy sewing projects to check out.

All the tutorials are free, thanks to the generous people who took the time to make and share them. The sewing world is full of amazing people, isn’t it?!

1. Make a Pin Cushion

No need to buy a pin cushion when you can make one that’s unique to you. One of my most-loved pinkeeps is a vintage mug with a fabric pouf I added.

Bonus points if your mug or teacup comes with a dish that can hold little sewing notions.

WiseCraft’s blog post has lots of cute upcycling ideas for DIY pincushions. And for a little more of a challenge, Erica Arndt shows how to make two floral pinkeeps with buttons.

2. Can you sew a button?

Here’s how to sew 3 button types. Very useful!

If you prefer photos and text over a video, check out this button sewing tutorial from the Art of Manliness.

3. Sew an Eyeglass Case

Love this because each time I reach for my glasses I’ll be reminded of my badass sewing skills.

4. A Circle Skirt

Skirts just might be the easiest piece of clothing to make.

5. Bow Scrunchie

Nice way to use up fabric scraps, and they’re cute gifts.

6. Hem Jeans Yourself

This skill can be a little challenging for a true beginner, but if you take your time, you can definitely do it.

7. A Simple Quilt

Quilts are the best blend of beauty and utility. I made this simple Bowtie quilt pattern based on the classic Bowtie block, with larger squares to make it simple. And the “bowtie” centers are appliqued on top, which avoids fussy seam-matching. The Rail Fence is another classic block that’s beginner-friendly, and Suzy Quilts’ free tutorial is super easy to follow.

I love quilts with only a few colors because it gives it a timeless quality. I could play with colors on the screen all day, but I’ll have to use the fabric I have in my house (no buying new fabric for now), so we’ll see what I end up using!
